Sunrise and sunset are the best times to see wildlife. We chose to leave at dawn. We headed to Sandoval Lake in our boat, located inside the Tambopata National Reserve. Sandoval Lake’s biodiversity is stunning. To get there, we walked nearly 3 km (1.8 miles) on a wooden path.

The walk always reveals rich fauna. At its end, there’s a small dock. Here, we took a rowboat for our lake tour. On this trip, we saw black caimans, giant otters, herons, turtles, monkeys, macaws, wild ducks, and more. We returned to the lodge for lunch before noon.

In the afternoon, we visited a Matsigenka native family. We interacted and learned about their culture. They taught us archery, spinning, and weaving cotton for their Cushma clothing. We also learned to make ropes from plant bark. They showed us how to create fire using only nature. As sunset approached, we returned to the city by boat.
