Puerto Maldonado – Tambopata a gateway to paradise
The Peruvian Amazon is a new world to discover abundant flora and fauna that can be accessed from various areas, although the best place is the Madre de Dios – Puerto Maldonado region which was declared on May 19, 1994 as the biodiversity capital of Peru.
The Peruvian Amazon, which occupies more than half of the country, is also a popular Peruvian vacation destination. Perfect for any itinerary, the jungle offers adventure travelers, as well as nature and wildlife lovers, a perfect place to explore. Puerto Maldonado boasts a variety of microclimates including tropical rainforests, subtropical forests, cloud forests and rainforests.
When to go / what to know about the jungle of Puerto Maldonado
What you should know is that the Peruvian Amazon is a year-round destination, with different departure dates for each trip. Travelers have to take into account the wet season and dry season when traveling to the jungle. There is a difference of 5 meters (16.4 ft.) in water level between these two seasons, so different animals can be sighted in each season. Most of the year the humidity remains between 70% and 80% throughout the year and temperatures range between 30 °C and 35 °C (86 °F and 95 °F).
Low water season, from May to November:
During the low water season travelers can expect less rain showers, although as the name Amazon rainforest suggests, rain is a probability. We might have 1-2 hours of rain per week during this season, this causes the rivers to carry less water, exposing hiking trails that are normally flooded during the high water season. Animals come out to the riverbanks in search of food, so some are easier to see during this season.
High water season, December to April:
During the high water season it rains about 30% more than during the low water season, so the rivers of the Amazon basin are high, making them more accessible and the Amazon rainforest is even more lush than usual. With the onset of the rains, the mating season for many species of animals also begins.
